The name umber is often traced back to the Latin term umbra, meaning “shadow,” but it also refers to an important source of an earth pigment called terra d’ombra, or “earth of Umbria.” This earth is used by painters and artists to produce rich, colorful grays that are priceless. Paints made with umbers are refined and accommodating, whereby the greenish raw umbers are used for cooler nuances and the reddish burnt umbers for warmer ones. This color is a warm shade, and the pigment comes from Cyprus.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
