For once, the name Veronese green does not imply that this bright green is made from a natural earth pigment from Verona. It is based on a mixture of luminous pigments championed by the Venetian Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese (1528–1588). Unlike the notoriously toxic arsenic pigment Schweinfurter green, this green was nontoxic. It became popular with other painters, and it was commercialized under the artist’s name. This green color is both lighter and grayer than the original. It was muted to enable its use on large wall surfaces.
