Chalk sources, such as the cliffs of the Champagne region or the deposits on Crete (Latin creta, “chalk”), are characterized by their ethereal colors. These vary from location to location and arise from yellow, red, or brown mineral deposits in the limestone. Under a microscope, the chalk that lends this color its glow can be seen to consist of small shards and elliptical discs, which are remnants of coral and shells from primeval marine animals. This diversity creates a surface on which incident light generates a magically radiant effect.
