KT 11.092 French chariot blue

The sumptuous blue of the doorway in Corbu’s Maison Blanche.

Referenz - Paul Baumann, Neue Farbtonkarte System Prase, 1912

Farbfunktion - materialization

Wirksamkeit - good under all lighting conditions

This is a rare example of a blue with simultaneous red and green components. Surfaces painted with such blues appear to be solid and spatially present, rather than light and receding. This makes them useful for objects that need to look substantial; doors and bannisters, for instance: French chariot blue makes them look welcoming and trustworthy. Le Corbusier was well aware of such effects, as a similar color was found on the main entrance door and the bannisters of Maison Blanche, the house he built for his parents.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
