English painter William Payne (1760–1830) was looking for a colorful gray which he intended to use as background for his landscapes. English paint producer Windsor & Newton, using a formulation based on the pigments Prussian blue, red madder lake and ochre, introduced Payne’s gray to the market with immediate success. It softly embeds surrounding colors, allowing any light shades, bright yellows, warm reds, or woods such as oak and ash to look bright and beautiful against its muted background.
