Mayan temples were decorated with a wonderfully luminous, greenish blue color. The Mayans had discovered that heating indigo with China clay in copal resin caused the indigo, which by itself is not lightfast, to be embedded in the clay’s silicate structure, thereby producing a lightfast blue pigment. The pigment residues were found in clay vessels used to burn oily resins in temple ceremonies. The cool, blue color is likely to have symbolized the rain’s healing power.

"Their colors are just unbelievably beautiful, whether the sun is shining, or it's rainy weather, or night, with every play of light they look different again. Incredible."
