A tiny gland in the shell of ¨spiny Murex mollusks secretes a liquid from which the ancient Greeks produced a precious, purple dye. A total of 10,000 snails yielded scarcely one gram of the color, making it so expensive that purple became the status symbol of the powerful. The Pope wore a robe of purple interwoven with golden threads. Nero allegedly beheaded thieves who wore it illegally. Our Tyrian purple is produced from magenta and ultramarine. It is strictly vegan and not reserved for kings, but it is just as mighty in its spatial presence.
