The root of the plant rubia tinctorum, or madder root, has been known as a coloring agent since ancient times. By the late nineteenth century, the individual colorants were synthesized industrially. The nuance of the synthetic product could be shifted from crimson to violet according to need. Tradenames such as Rembrandt’s lacquer and Ruben’s red testify to the importance of the transparent red to the artistic palette. This red is light and decorative; like wallpaper, it is used to drape a wall, an effect achieved by virtue of the transparent red pigment.
