The widespread availability and luminosity of natural red earth pigments ensured their continual presence on the palette of paints used for the most beautiful artworks and buildings throughout history. From approximately 1940 onwards, more opaque and easier to process synthetic iron oxide pigments made from iron cuttings almost completely replaced the natural red ochres. This shade is the darkest brown that can be made from these iron cuttings. Since it is more solid in appearance and spatially present than natural red ochres, it is often favored for use in large spaces with bright, saturated colors.
